GLNG: Venture Global unveils CCS plan for Louisiana LNG projects

US-based Venture Global LNG announced last week that it would develop carbon capture and storage (CCS) capacity to serve two of its LNG export projects on Louisiana’s Gulf Coast.
Venture Global said that the CCS project still needed regulatory approvals but was shovel-ready. The venture entails compressing carbon dioxide (CO2) at the company’s Calcasieu Pass and Plaquemines LNG sites and then transporting it for injection into subsurface saline aquifers, where it will be permanently stored.
Calcasieu Pass is currently under construction and nearing completion, while Venture Global is targeting a final investment decision (FID) on Plaquemines LNG later this year. The company said it now anticipates capturing and sequestering an estimated 500,000 tonnes per year (tpy) of CO2 from the two liquefaction projects through its new CCS development.
Venture Global said it also expects to use similar infrastructure to capture and sequester another 500,000 tpy of CO2 from the CP2 LNG project once that facility is permitted and sanctioned. The company made no mention of its other proposed liquefaction terminal, Delta LNG, adding weight to speculation that the latter project will be scrapped.
Other developers are proposing to add CCS components to their US LNG export projects, but with Calcasieu Pass potentially ready to ship its first cargo later this year, this would mark the first time CCS is deployed for an existing export terminal. Venture Global did not specify a timeline for building the CCS project, however.
