LatAmOil: Brazilian MPs set up caucus to lobby for oil and gas industry

Brazilian members of parliament have formed a congressional caucus to lobby for the interests of the oil and gas industry, which is mostly controlled by the national oil company (NOC) Petrobras, Reuters said on October 26.

This caucus is to support Petrobras in its intention to explore for oil and gas in offshore fields near the mouth of the Amazon River, in Brazil’s north.

“Petrobras must do that [exploration]. We have to explore for oil offshore from Para to Amapa States, like Guyana and Venezuela are doing,” commented Eduardo Pazuello, the caucus’ leader.

Petrobras has been keen to carry out exploration projects within the basins known as the Equatorial Margin off its northern coast, especially since the neighbouring states of Guyana and Suriname have found large oil deposits in their own offshore zones to the west.
