LatAmOil: CGX, Frontera prepare to spud Kawa-1 exploration well

CGX Energy and Frontera Energy are gearing up to spud the Kawa-1 exploration well at the Corentyne block offshore Guyana.

According to CGX documents viewed by OilNOW.gy and a statement from Frontera, the two Canadian companies intend to begin drilling operations in the first half of August. They will need about 85 days to sink the well to a depth of about 6,575 metres, which will allow them to target a stratigraphic trap within the Santonian layer.

The partners hope the site will be analogous to an area that lies directly to the east – namely, the middle part of Block 58 in Suriname’s offshore zone, where TotalEnergies (France) and Apache (US) have made four oil discoveries. The well will be drilled within the eastern section of Corentyne, which lies adjacent to the maritime border between Guyana and Suriname.

In the document cited by OilNOW.gy, CGX expressed optimism about the exploration drilling project, saying that Kawa “shows significant promise for a low-risk, high-reward prospect.” It said it had selected the drilling site on the basis of time processing that highlighted lead areas and depth processing that confirmed the prospects.
