LatAmOil: Guyana’s VP rejects idea of refining oil in Trinidad and Tobago

Guyana’s Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has dismissed suggestions of sending a portion of the country’s oil to Trinidad and Tobago for processing.

Speaking at the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo in Georgetown, Jagdeo pointed out that the island state lacks a functioning refinery, rendering such a proposal impractical and ineffective for addressing broader regional energy needs.

The vice president also spoke on Guyana’s role in achieving energy security for the reason, explaining: “Energy security for the region has to be looked at in the context of affordability and competitiveness.”

Jagdeo was speaking after Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Stuart Young called for expanding regional collaboration to tackle energy challenges collectively. Young had proposed leveraging Trinidad’s infrastructure for processing a portion of Guyana’s oil output, but Jagdeo expressed reservations about the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of such collaboration.
