LatAmOil: Guyana says talks with Venezuela over oil-rich Essequibo should resume
by Roberta Harrington 27 June 2024
Guyana’s president, Irfaan Ali, has called for new diplomatic talks with Venezuela over the disputed oil-rich Essequibo territory following Venezuela’s presidential elections on July 28.
“Engagement is an important part, not only for our neighbours but for ensuring that we maintain this region as a zone of peace. We have always said that diplomacy and engagement are critical on every issue we pursue, particularly security issues,” Ali said recently.
The disputed territory is currently administered by Guyana – but Venezuela has claimed it. Essequibo, at 59,500 square kilometres, makes up two-thirds of Guyana’s territory.
