LatAmOil: Guyana seeks partners for building up gas infrastructure

Guyana’s Ministry of Natural Resources has released a request for proposals (RFP) in search of companies to support the design, construction, finance and operation of the nation’s gas infrastructure.

The government is aiming to expedite the development of its natural gas and associated gas resources by way of establishing an open-access infrastructure system to support existing offshore developments, ultimately leading to gas monetisation.

The Guyanese government stipulated in the RFP that it aims for the project to be entirely privately financed and executed, involving no direct participation from the government itself. The winning bidder will be required to ensure the commercial, technical and environmental feasibility of the infrastructure.

Georgetown took this step after Guyanese Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo expressed dissatisfaction with the speed at which ExxonMobil (US), the operator of the offshore Stabroek block, is developing Guyana’s offshore gas resources. The vice president attributed this slow pace to ExxonMobil’s prioritisation of oil production.
