LatAmOil: Pemex excluded from global oil majors’ agreement on emissions

Mexico’s state-owned energy major Pemex has been conspicuously omitted from an agreement signed by 50 prominent global oil companies that have pledged to attain zero pollutant emissions by 2050, S&P Global reported on December 5.

The signatories listed within the COP28 framework include major players such as BP (UK), Saudi Aramco, Equinor (Norway), Eni (Italy) and ExxonMobil (US). This agreement forms an integral part of the Global Decarbonisation Accelerator programme that was introduced at the climate summit in Dubai.

The programme focuses on the following issues: future energy systems (encompassing renewable energy and hydrogen), the fossil fuel sector, emission-intensive industries and targeted methane reduction initiatives.

Sultan al-Jaber, President of COP28, underlined the significance of these commitments as a proactive engagement with oil and gas companies during climate discussions. “If we want to accelerate progress across the climate agenda, we must make everyone accountable for climate action,” he said.
