McDermott completes its inaugural subsea project for TotalEnergies in Angola

US-based McDermott, a global integrated engineering solution provider to the energy industry, has delivered its first subsea project in Angola. In a press release on October 16, the company announced the successful completion of engineering, procurement, construction, installation, pre-commissioning and commissioning activities for TotalEnergies’ Begonia field development.

The Begonia project is located in Block 17/06, approximately 150 kilometres off the country’s coast. It is also notable as Angola's first inter-block development, linking Block 17/06 with the adjacent Block 17 also operated by TotalEnergies.

The field was discovered in 2009, with first oil achieved in July 2025. The Begonia development comprises five subsea wells tied back to the existing Pazflor floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel in Block 17. The company said the new infrastructure would add approximately 30,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) to Pazflor's existing production capacity.

According to McDermott, the project, awarded in 2022, was executed using the company’s integrated model, leveraging its global engineering and procurement expertise, expanding onshore fabrication capacity in Luanda, and conducting offshore installations with the company’s versatile marine fleet. McDermott’s Amazon vessel installed over 40 km of rigid pipelines, while its North Ocean 102 handled the subsea umbilical installations, the company said.

“This milestone reflects the strength of our integrated subsea capabilities, executed seamlessly from engineering through offshore installation,” Mahesh Swaminathan, McDermott’s Senior Vice President, Subsea and Floating Facilities said in the statement.

Swaminathan underscored the strategic value of the Amazon vessel to the company’s operations, particularly in regions where deepwater infrastructure is key to strengthening energy security.

“This outcome also speaks to the strength of our partnership with TotalEnergies, the commitment of our local teams and partners in Angola, as well as the strategic importance of West Africa in our portfolio,” he added.

The Begonia development is operated by TotalEnergies (30% interest), with partners Sonangol E&P (30%), Sonangol Sinopec International (27.5%), ETU Energias (7.5%), and Falcon Oil (5%).

The oil produced is primarily intended for export markets, contributing to Angola's status as one of Africa’s leading oil exporters. The development leverages existing infrastructure, reducing both costs and environmental impact, and aligns with TotalEnergies’ strategy to enhance production efficiency and sustainability in its offshore operations.

McDermott is a fully integrated provider of engineering and construction solutions to the energy industry, from project design to commissioning. McDermott operates in over 30 countries with a workforce of about 30,000 and a diversified fleet of specialised marine construction vessels and fabrication facilities worldwide.
