MEOG: ADNOC further extends BGP mega-survey

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) has announced a substantial $490mn contract extension with BGP to further advance its ongoing 3D seismic survey, the largest of its kind globally.

Initiated in 2018, this extensive survey spans an impressive 85,000 square km, aiming to uncover new oil and gas reserves across Abu Dhabi’s prolific fields. The latest contract will enhance the survey's reach, focusing specifically on identifying additional resources within ADNOC’s onshore territories.

Leveraging cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies, ADNOC and BGP plan to expedite data interpretation, optimise resource recovery, and maximise the use of existing infrastructure in these fields, thereby boosting efficiency.

A significant portion of the project’s value, over 70%, is set to benefit the UAE's economy through ADNOC’s In-Country Value (ICV) programme, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to local economic and industrial development.

Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, ADNOC’s upstream executive director, underscored the importance of leveraging advanced technologies to meet the increasing global energy demand.

“Our investment in the world’s largest 3D Mega Seismic Survey underscores the critical role of cutting-edge technologies in our operations as we strive to fully harness our oil and gas resources, ensuring the UAE remains a reliable energy provider globally,” Al Kindy said.

The 3-D mega seismic survey is the world’s largest continuous seismic project, covering both onshore and offshore areas of Abu Dhabi. The project aims to generate high-resolution and high-fold 3D seismic data, providing an in-depth understanding of the region’s complex geological formations.

Building on the success of this project, the survey’s scope was expanded in late 2020, increasing from 53,000 square km to 82,000 square km, with the contract value rising to $2.12bn. This extension further solidifies the survey's status as the largest combined onshore and offshore 3D seismic survey worldwide.

BGP, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), specialises in geophysics and is represented in the UAE by Al Masaood Oil Industry Supplies & Services Co.
