MEOG: Aramco makes gas discoveries

Majority state-backed Saudi Aramco has discovered two new unconventional gas fields in the Kingdom’s Eastern Province as it steps up its gas production efforts.

In comments provided to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud said the discoveries were called Awtad and Al-Dahna. The discoveries are understood to be tight gas.

“Saudi Aramco was able to discover two fields of unconventional natural gas in the Eastern Province,” Prince Abdulaziz said.

He added: “The Awtad unconventional natural gas field was discovered south-west of the Ghawar field, 142 km south-west of the city of Hofuf, and the Al-Dahna unconventional natural gas field was discovered 230 km south-west of the city of Dhahran,” the location of Aramco’s main compound.

Gas was reported to have flowed from Awtad well 108001 at a rate of 10mn cubic feet (283,000 cubic metres) per day per day along with 740 barrels per day (bpd) of condensate. Another 16.9 mmcf (479,000 cubic metres) per day of gas and 165 bpd of condensate flowed from well 100921.

Meanwhile, 8.1 mmcf (229,000 cubic metres) per day of gas flowed from the Al-Dahna-4 well, with Al-Dahna-370100 yielding 17.5 mmcf (496,000 cubic metres) per day of gas and 362 bpd of condensate.
