MEOG: Iran progresses with gas expansion

Iran is progressing with efforts to boost gas production capabilities with two key projects: the drilling of three infill wells at the South Pars gas field and drilling of a gas well at the Kish gas field. These efforts underscore Tehran’s determination to enhance its energy sector despite ongoing international sanctions.

Petropars began drilling the South Pars wells after the installation of a rig at the SPQ1 gas platform, located on the maritime border between Iran and Qatar. The move is part of Iran’s broader strategy to increase gas production from the key field, Iran’s portion of the world’s largest gas reservoir, which it shares with Qatar.

The South Pars campaign is part of a more extensive plan announced in July by the Pars Oil and Gas Co. (POGC), which oversees the development of the field. This plan involves drilling 35 new wells across South Pars, aiming to sustain and enhance gas output. To execute this ambitious project, POGC has partnered with several domestic firms, including Pasargad, Petropars, Petro Iran and Shomal Drilling companies.

These partnerships are crucial for meeting the project’s objectives within the stipulated three-year timeline and an investment of around $1.2bn.
