MEOG: Tethys Oil begins Oman drill

Oman-focused Swedish firm Tethys Oil has announced the start of drilling operations on the Kunooz-1 well in the Fahd area of Oman’s onshore Block 58.

According to a company press release, the well is expected to be drilled to a total depth of around 3,900 metres over a period of around 45 days.

The company said that Kunooz-1 is being drilled into the Masirah Bay formation with the Nafun play carbonates Buah and Khufai as its primary targets. These are found at depths of around 3,500 metres and 3,800 metres respectively. Its secondary target is the Ara/Birba carbonates at a depth of around 3,100 metres.

Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals has extended the initial exploration phase for the Block 58 exploration and production agreement (EPSA) by a year until July 2025.

The well is Tethys’ first in Block 58 and it noted that the prospect “is one of several identified on Block 58 in close proximation to well established play fairway and infrastructure in neighbouring Block 6”.

The 900,000-square km Block 6 concession, which has a total production capacity of around 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), is estimated to hold more than 75% of the Sultanate’s remaining oil reserves.
