MEOG: US base at Syria’s Omar oilfield under attack

Several explosions were heard at the US base in the Al-Omar oil field on October 28, according to reports in local media. Meanwhile, Iran’s Mehr News Agency quoted sources as saying that the base had been attacked, and thick smoke could be seen rising above it. According to the reports, drones were used in this operation and they directly hit the targets.

Omar is the largest Syrian oilfield and is currently held by the US-backed Syria Defence Forces (SDF). The Syrian government has at various points lodged complaints with the United Nations (UN) about the presence of US forces in the east and northeast of the country. The government in Damascus has claimed that US troops are looting Syrian oil.

Another explosion was heard on October 27 from inside the Al Tanf base, which hosts US occupation forces.

The SDF has control over the country’s largest oilfields, including Omar, the largest, Ward, Kewari, Jafra, Jarnuf, Azrak, Kahar, Afra, Sueytat and Galban.

Omar had been producing around 30,000 barrels per day (bpd) prior to the Syrian Civil War, but was in the hands of Daesh from mid-2011 until October 2017.
