NorthAmOil: Biden administration approves LNG exports from Alaska project
The Biden administration gave the green light on April 13 to exports of LNG from the Alaska LNG project to countries with which the US does not have a free trade agreement. The move is seen as a key step forward in allowing the US to compete with Russia in shipping LNG from the Arctic to Asia.
Alaska Gasline Development Corp’s (AGDC) $39bn project is anticipated to come online by 2030 assuming it gets the required investment permits. The majority of the LNG produced at the facility would be shipped to countries in Asia.
Meanwhile, AGDC still needs to take a final investment decision (FID) on the project and the Department of Energy (DoE) must still evaluate the long-term viability of the facility, which features a liquefaction terminal on the Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska and a proposed 807-mile (1,299-km) pipeline to transport gas stranded in northern Alaska across the state. Construction approval was already granted by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in 2020.
