REM: Peru's solar potential higher than Germany, energy minister says

Despite Peru’s significant solar potential, surpassing that of Germany, the country faces major obstacles in capitalising on this opportunity. Rómulo Mucho, Minister of Energy and Mines, highlighted that Peru has a higher solar generation capacity than Germany, with the government projecting 2,909 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2027.

However, much of this potential remains unrealised due to deep-seated corruption, political instability, and lack of government action.

While Germany, with a much lower solar potential, produced 57,600 GWh of energy from solar panels in 2022 – almost matching Peru's entire electricity output – Peru lags far behind. The Minister’s optimistic projections contrast starkly with the reality of Peru's energy sector, where dependency on water and gas remains dominant, and efforts to diversify energy sources move at a sluggish pace.
