REM: SEG Solar breaks ground on Indonesia’s biggest photovoltaic industrial park

US photovoltaic module manufacturer SEG Solar began construction of its integrated photovoltaic industrial park in Batang, Indonesia, the company announced on September 30.
Upon completion of construction, the industrial park will boast an annual production capacity of 5 GW for solar wafers, silicon ingots, cells and modules. The facility will be the largest of its kind in the Southeast Asian country.
SEG Solar is aiming to complete Phase 1 of the project by the second quarter of 2025. The company is targeting to build 10 N-type cell production lines. The firm is seeking to develop partnerships with other PV component suppliers and manufacture a handful of PV products across the value chain, which will also include junction boxes, frames and EVA films.
The photovoltaic industrial park is located about 400 km east of the capital Jakarta spread over an area of 40 hectares. The project’s price tag is expected to surpass $500mn in investment.
“As a crucial part of SEG's global strategy, we are committed to building the Indonesian facility into a highly efficient and competitive vertically integrated photovoltaic industrial park, optimising the upstream and downstream layout of the N-type industry chain,” said SEG Solar Co-founder Michael Eden.
“The Solar cells and solar panels produced in this industry park will support Indonesian government in its carbon emission reduction plan and supply SEG Solar’s US module factory in Houston, ensuring the traceability and reliability of the supply chain,” Eden added.
SEG Solar was founded in 2016. In seven years of operation, the Houston-headquartered firm has delivered more than 5 GW of solar modules to customers worldwide. The company forecasts its production for 2024 will add another 0.5 GW of solar modules to its total production.
