REM: Shell may develop six offshore wind farms totalling 1.7 GW off Brazil

Shell Brasil has filed environmental licensing requests for six offshore wind farms totalling 1.7 GW.

The projects would be in the states of Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul. The requests were filed with the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA).

Environmental studies will begin later this year, said Shell, the oil supermajor.

"With more than 20 years of experience in wind power in the world and more than 50 years of tradition in offshore projects, Shell intends to combine its expertise on these two fronts with the aim of providing more energy and clean energy to the country," said Gabriela Oliveira, Shell's renewable generation manager in Brazil.

Oliveira told Bloomberg that it will bid in the South American country’s power auctions and intends to use electricity generated by the wind projects for the production of green hydrogen.
