TotalEnergies strikes 10-year LNG deal with India's GSPC

France’s TotalEnergies has signed a 10-year sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with India’s Gujarat State Petroleum (GSPC) to supply 400,000 tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG, the former announced on February 12 during India Energy Week in New Delhi. The deal, which will take effect from 2026, will see six LNG cargoes annually delivered to India’s west coast terminals from TotalEnergies' global portfolio.

State-owned GSPC, a major player in India’s gas sector, will distribute the LNG primarily to industrial customers, as well as households, businesses, and service stations supplying compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles such as auto-rickshaws. The agreement aligns with India’s push to expand the use of natural gas as a lower-carbon energy source and reduce its dependence on coal, TotalEnergies said.

“We are delighted to have been chosen by GSPC to supply them with LNG in India. This new deal underscores TotalEnergies' leadership in LNG and its commitment to India’s energy transition and security of supply,” commented Gregory Joffroy, the French company’s senior vice president for LNG.

GSPC, which supplies nearly one-third of Gujarat’s gas demand, sees the contract as a key step in securing competitively priced LNG over the long term. “Partnering with TotalEnergies, one of the largest LNG players globally, aligns with our strategy to strengthen our long-term portfolio and reinforce our position in India’s gas trading market,” said Milind Torawane, the company’s managing director.

The agreement comes as India, the world’s fourth-largest LNG importer, continues its shift toward natural gas to support industrial growth and environmental targets. The Indian government aims to increase gas’s share in the energy mix to 15% from the current 6.2%, with TotalEnergies playing a growing role in supporting supply security and infrastructure expansion.

TotalEnergies, already a major supplier of LNG to India, has been actively increasing its presence in the country’s gas market. It has previously signed long-term supply deals with other major Indian buyers including Indian Oil.

As the world’s third-largest LNG player, TotalEnergies has a global LNG portfolio of 40mn tonnes per year and interests in liquefaction plants across multiple geographies. The company has set a target to increase natural gas to 50% of its energy sales mix by 2030, as part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate methane emissions from the gas value chain.
