AfrOil: Ghana expects to complete Tema LNG terminal by year-end

Ghana’s long-delayed Tema LNG import terminal is expected to be finished before the end of 2024, the country’s national oil regulator has revealed.

In an interview with Bloomberg on February 20, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the head of Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority (NPA), stated that the country had signed a deal to import the super-chilled fuel from Equatorial Guinea LNG, which is majority-owned by Marathon Oil, Equatorial Guinea’s state-run Sonagas and Japan’s Marubeni. He also noted that the floating terminal, which is owned by Tema LNG Terminal Co. (TLTC), would use converted tankers to store and regasify LNG.

The terminal, which includes a pipeline and storage network, will bring natural gas into Ghana to satisfy domestic industrial demand and fuel vehicles designed to burn compressed natural gas (CNG), among other purposes.

The import terminal has suffered a handful of setbacks and was originally scheduled to be finished by 2020. The project will play a crucial role in improving the energy security of Ghana, which currently imports all of its gas from Nigeria.
