DMEA: ADNOC to produce sustainable aviation fuel at Ruwais refinery

ADNOC Refining – a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) – has received International Sustainability Carbon Certification from ISCC System GmbH to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the company’s 920,000 barrels per day (bpd) Ruwais refining complex. The certification – awarded October 3 – includes ISCC European Union (EU) and the ISCC Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). It additionally includes co-processing certifications which would allow the Ruwais refinery to make SAF from feedstock of used cooking oil blended with jet fuel, according to ADNOC.

ADNOC added that it would now be able to supply SAF from Ruwais to various international airlines from Abu Dhabi Airport via the company’s 1,600-km pipeline network, having now received the certification. The ISCC award is now the first such award given to a Middle Eastern refinery, and directly supports the company’s aim to decarbonise while collaborating with customers. It will additionally help ADNOC move closer towards meeting the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative, which has been set at 2045 by the company internally, according to ADNOC.
