DMEA: Libya discusses domestic biofuel production

Libya is currently seeking to localise its biofuel industry and production projects by introducing an ambitious project involving domesticating biofuel production by planting 40mn Jatropha trees across several Libyan municipalities.

The project was brought up in a meeting between the director of foreign affairs and international co-operation at the prime minister’s office, Taher Al-Baour, and Saleh Bouisir, president of Libya’s Gustave Biofuel Company in the country’s capital, Tripoli, on November 5. The two parties discussed the feasibility plan, along with its multifaceted implications involving environmental, international and economic sectors alongside mayors from several municipalities, ministry representatives, experts and university professors who also participated in the meeting.

According to a Government of National Unity (GNU) statement, Bouisir emphasised the significance of the project when pertaining to deriving biofuel from Jatropha tree oil, while highlighting the strategic importance of biofuel initiatives overall. He said Libya would “take substantial steps towards the manufacturing and utilisation of clean biofuels.”
