Egypt activates second gas production well at West Burullus

Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said that a second gas well at the West Burullus field, part of Cairn Energy’s (LSE: CNE) investments, has been brought into production at a rate of 12mn cubic feet per day, according to a statement cited by Economy Plus on March 5.

The new well has been added to the gas production map in the Mediterranean at the West Burullus offshore field, operated by PetroWeb, a subsidiary of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), via the Barlas Gas Company facilities.

The addition of the well has increased the field’s output from 25mn to 37mn cubic feet of natural gas per day, according to the ministry. Production is expected to exceed 70mn cubic feet daily once the third well is connected in the coming days, while drilling of the fourth well has been completed, with promising results and evaluation tests underway.

The field development plan also includes drilling two additional wells on the Bapers platform linked to the Web platform.

Meanwhile, Badr El Din Petroleum continues developing its concessions in the Western Desert. The recently drilled BED 15‑35 well, part of the BED 15‑31 discovery, has shown production rates of 10–15mn cubic feet of gas per day and 300–650 barrels of condensate daily. This raises confirmed reserves in the area from 15bn to 25bn cubic feet of gas.

Four more production wells are planned in the Badr El Din concession to increase output and fully exploit discovered reserves. The initiatives support the Ministry of Petroleum’s efforts to reduce import bills and strengthen Egypt’s energy security.
