Freeport LNG granted 40-month extension for Train 4

Freeport LNG has obtained a 40-month extension from US federal regulators to finish construction of its Train 4, Pipeline & Gas Journal reported on July 17 citing a letter from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

With the new extension obtained, the Texas LNG facility now has until December 1, 2031 to finish construction of Train 4, while also allowing the firm time to secure additional offtake agreements.

It marks another extension granted from FERC for the long-delayed Train 4 expansion. The federal regulator first authorized the expansion project in May 2019, giving the Texas-based company four years to finish the project.

The company also requested extensions in 2020 and 2022, the latter of which came after an explosion in June 2022, which shuttered the plant for more than six months.

The extension request in 2022 sought to complete the project by August 1, 2028.

With repairs completed and the terminal operating at full production capacity since May 1 2025, attention has turned to marketing Train 4 and attracting offtake agreements.

The extension request was submitted to FERC on June 19, requesting a decision within 30 days to allow Freeport LNG to maintain momentum as it searches for commercial deals and financing.

Train 4 is expected to share a similar construction design as the other three trains. Train 4’s production capacity will also be 5.1mn tonnes per year (tpy), giving the facility a total capacity of 20.4mn tpy once completed.

Production at Freeport LNG has been closely watched in recent years as a number of smaller outages have also plagued the facility on Quintana Island in addition to the six-month outage in 2022, which have caused significant sways in market prices.
