GLNG: Third floating LNG terminal arrives in Germany as it continues diversifying energy supply

Germany received the Hoegh Gannet floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) on January 20 at its Brunsbuettel Elbehafen port near Hamburg. It marks the third floating LNG (FLNG) terminal to start up in recent weeks as the country continues its shift away from Russian gas.

The first LNG cargo is slated to arrive at the end of January and will be shipped by ADNOC from Abu Dhabi’s Island Das, with Uniper and EnBW along with RWE being responsible for filling the FSRU with LNG.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Germany has moved at full speed to diversify away from its former top supplier and has identified FLNG terminals as a key ingredient in strengthening its energy security.

With land-based LNG terminals judged to require too much time to build, FLNG terminals have been prioritised in Berlin’s journey to wean itself off Russian gas.

In December the country’s first LNG terminal opened in the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven, constructed in unprecedented speed to host the Hoegh Esperanza FLNG terminal. It was followed by the opening of another FLNG terminal in Lubmin. Together the three FSRU’s bring Germany’s LNG import capacity to 14bn cubic metres.
