LatAmOil: Colombia’s hydrogen ambitions

Colombia’s government has finalised and published a long-term plan for the establishment of a domestic hydrogen industry. The plan, known as the Hydrogen Roadmap, outlines the steps the South American country will take to promote the production and consumption of blue and green hydrogen as an energy source over the next 30 years.

According to officials from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Bogota is planning to set up the country’s hydrogen economy in three phases. The first phase, which will end in 2030, will focus almost exclusively on blue hydrogen production, making use of domestically produced coal and natural gas, as well as carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Then in the second phase, which will run from 2030 to 2040, Colombia will seek to add green hydrogen to the energy mix without retiring blue hydrogen. This will involve setting up green hydrogen hubs in locations with significant wind and solar energy potential. Then in the third phase, which will run from 2040 to 2050, it will phase out blue hydrogen in favour of green hydrogen.
