Mizuho Securities breaks new ground with tokenised renewable energy investment
Japan’s Mizuho Securities has launched the country’s first tokenised infrastructure private equity fund for renewable energy. This pioneering step, in collaboration with Blue Sky Solar, marks a significant milestone in integrating blockchain technology with clean energy investments. The fund, which supports eight solar facilities with a combined 9.5 MW capacity, has the potential to power around 9,000 homes and could pave the way for broader industry adoption, as reported by ESG News.
Mizuho’s venture into tokenised funding uses a security token offering (STO) structure to reduce the cost and complexity traditionally associated with renewable energy investments. By leveraging blockchain, the tokenisation process streamlines asset management, ensuring transparency and efficiency. A key feature of this new fund is its dual-entity setup, where Blue Sky Asset Management oversees the LLC assets, and token investments are managed through a limited partnership. This structure also ensures that token transfers require issuer approval, maintaining control over the movement of assets.
The fund itself highlights Japan’s evolving approach to financing renewable energy. Through this innovative model, Mizuho Securities and Blue Sky Solar are not just scaling up clean energy infrastructure, but also showing the growing potential of tokenisation to revolutionise the financial landscape. The issuance is powered by the iBet for Fin platform, a product of BOOSTRY, Japan’s second-largest digital securities blockchain network, which also supported Hitachi’s green bond issuance last year.
Blue Sky Solar, a key partner in the project, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having successfully managed over 376 projects with a total capacity of 318 MW. In this new partnership, their involvement helps to accelerate Japan’s renewable energy capacity by integrating cutting-edge financial technologies with sustainable energy solutions.
The launch of this tokenised fund underscores a broader strategic shift in Japan, where the integration of advanced technologies like blockchain into renewable energy is becoming increasingly important. It represents a step forward in the digitisation of energy finance, offering both increased efficiency and enhanced security in asset management.
