REM: Biden sharply hikes US tariffs on Chinese EVs, batteries, solar cells

US President Joe Biden has unveiled steep tariff hikes on an array of Chinese products, including electric vehicles, EV batteries and solar cells. This is in response to alleged Chinese unfair trade practices.

Biden is also increasing tariffs on semiconductors, critical minerals, port cranes, as well as previously reported raises on steel and aluminium.

The president faces a tough battle for re-election in November and is trying to protect US manufacturing and bolster his climate credentials. But he also faces the prospect of raised prices for consumers.

The increases are expected to impact about $18bn in annual imports, said the White House.

“Today, we serve our statutory goal to stop the PRC’s harmful technology transfer-related acts, policies, and practices, including its cyber intrusions and cyber theft,” said US Trade Representative Katherine Tai in a statement.
