Singapore raises solar power target to 4 GW by 2035

Singapore has adopted a goal of installing 4 GW of solar capacity by 2035, pv magazine reports. The new objective sits on top of the city-state's current aim of reaching 3 GW by 2030.

The higher target lands while the country is still short of its earlier milestone, with 2.3 GW installed as of October. Even with that expansion, solar is expected to cover no more than 10% of Singapore's electricity demand in 2050, so the government is also pursuing energy storage and power imports.

Speaking at the Asia Clean Energy Summit, Gan Siow Huang, who is Minister of State for Foreign Affairs as well as for Energy, Trade and Industry, unveiled the target and outlined measures to reach it. "We have just raised our ambition to 4 GWp by 2035," Gan said. According to the Energy Market Authority (EMA), Singapore is well placed to hit its 2030 goal without difficulty.

Gan said the EMA had opened a tender that pools solar demand from government agencies for use on public premises. Projects under the tender include solar carports and building-integrated PV. The regulator is also developing an online portal with the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore to help homeowners install panels and locate installers. Further details will be released later.

JTC, the industrial agency, is testing an "overhang" solar array on a canopy linking two buildings at Woodlands East Industrial Estate in partnership with EDP APAC, according to Gan. JTC has also opened two innovation challenges. One targets facade-mounted PV. The other seeks containerised solar units combined with mobile batteries that could replace diesel generators on temporary worksites.

Working alongside the Singapore Land Authority and CSEM, a Swiss research centre, the government is also weighing whether to test solar roof tiles on state-owned heritage buildings.

According to Gan, Singapore currently has about 350 MWh of energy storage and aims to reach just over 1 GWh by 2030. She also pointed out that Sembcorp Utilities had received conditional approval from the EMA to bring in 1.3 GW of electricity, sourced from Peninsular Malaysia or routed by way of it.

In March, Singapore raised its 2030 goal to 3 GWp. The country installed 504 MW of solar in 2025, bringing its year-end total to 2,093 MW. By the EMA's estimate, rooftop systems make up over 80% of overall capacity. The biggest ground-mounted installation is Sembcorp Jurong Island Solar Farm, which has a capacity of 118 MW and began operating in 2025.
