TotalEnergies resumes oil production at Al-Mabrook field in Libya after a decade-long halt
French energy major TotalEnergies has announced the resumption of oil production at the Al-Mabrook field in Libya, marking a significant step in the gradual return of oil activities to the country, according to a statement, cited by Asharq Business on March 12.
The Al-Mabrook oil field, located in the Sirte Basin of central Libya, is operated by the Mabruk Oil Operations joint venture, a partnership between the state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC) and TotalEnergies. After suffering significant damage from militant attacks in 2015, the field has been undergoing extensive redevelopment to restore its production capacity to approximately 40,000 barrels per day.
The company has restarted production at the onshore field, which is part of the C17 concession located approximately 130 kilometres south of Sirte, where the company holds a 37.5% stake. Production had been halted since 2015.
A new production facility at the Al-Mabrook field has a capacity of 25,000 barrels per day, with construction work on the plant commencing in May 2024. The facility became operational on February 28, 2026, less than two years after the project began.
Julien Boughe, TotalEnergies’ Exploration and Production Manager for the MENA region, stated that the resumption of production is part of the company's long-term commitment to Libya, coinciding with its 70th anniversary of operations in the country this year.
This project aligns with the company’s strategy to develop low-cost, low-emission oil production and supports its target of achieving a 3% annual production growth through 2030. TotalEnergies has been active in Libya since 1956, with operations including the offshore Al-Jurf field and the onshore Sharara region.
