Turkey’s natural gas consumption rose by 16-18% y/y to a record 60-61bn cubic metres (bcm) in 2025, Yasar Arslan, head of local natural gas distributors union Gazbir, has informed Turkish news portal Enerji Gunlugu.

The country's annual natural gas consumption has never before surpassed the 60 bcm threshold.

According to data from government-run gas monopoly Botas, gas sales in the country amounted to 51.5 bcm in January-November, with imports standing at 51.3 bcm.

In 2024, Turkey consumed 53.2 bcm of natural gas and imported 52.2 bcm, according to data from energy watchdog EPDK.

Household consumption moves beyond 20 bcm

Consumption of natural gas by households moved past the 20 bcm level for the first time. It expanded by 14% y/y to 21.5 bcm.

Per household consumption, meanwhile, rose by 7-8% y/y to 990 cubic metres (cm) in 2025. That compares to the 10-year average of 950 cm.

Given the arrival of higher temperatures, consumption per household declined from higher than 1,000 cm levels to the 900-950 cm band.

Power plants’ consumption in 2025 increased by 17-18% y/y to 16-17 bcm last year from 13.9 bcm in 2024. Industry’s consumption grew by 5-6% y/y to 14-15 bcm.

Aksa, biggest grid operator

Arslan is also board chairman of Aksa Dogalgaz, the largest gas grid operator in Turkey. On December 31, Aksa Dogalgaz, owned by Kazanci Holding, said that it had completed the acquisition of Adapazari Gaz Dagitim (AGDAS), the eighth largest gas grid in the country.

In January last year, Aksa Dogalgaz bought Bursagaz Dogalgaz Dagitim and Kayserigaz Dogalgaz Dagitim from Socar Turkey. A consolidation process has been seen in the industry in recent years.

Aksa Dogalgaz has around 8.3mn subscribers, representing a market share of approximately 40%. There are 22mn gas subscribers across the country, located in 30 provinces, along with 367 towns and districts. The utility delivered 16 bcm of gas in 2024.

There are 72 natural gas grids in Turkey.
