Two dead, four injured in Algerian Hassi Messaoud oil field blaze

Two workers have been confirmed dead and four others injured following a fire at Algeria’s Hassi Messaoud oil field, the largest in Algeria, Al Sabah reported on March 8, citing a statement from the state-owned energy major Sonatrach.

The incident occurred during routine maintenance work involving a snubbing unit, a specialised pressure intervention device belonging to the National Well Services Company, at a site situated deep in the southern Algerian desert.

According to the official statement, Sonatrach’s emergency response teams acted swiftly to contain the blaze, successfully shut in the well to prevent further leakage, and fully extinguish the fire. The company has confirmed that the situation is now fully under control.

The injured personnel were immediately evacuated to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention. While the fire has been suppressed, Sonatrach has yet to disclose the specific cause of the ignition, and an investigation is expected to determine the technical failures that led to the fatal accident.

The Hassi Messaoud field is the backbone of Algeria's oil production, making safety and operational integrity top priorities for the state. This tragic event is part of the inherent risks involved in high-pressure well interventions in Algeria.

Following the immediate emergency phase, industry experts will likely scrutinise the snubbing protocols used during the operation to prevent any recurrence in the field and ensure the safety of the workforce in future maintenance cycles.
