Vietnam's Ca Mau starts construction of wind farm

Southern Vietnam's Ca Mau Province has begun construction of a nearly $95mn wind power project aimed at boosting renewable energy production and supporting long-term economic growth.

Local authorities and Japan–Bac Lieu Energy JSC held a groundbreaking ceremony on June 20 for the Japan–Bac Lieu Wind Power Plant in Dong Hai Commune. The project carries an investment of almost VND2.5 trillion ($94.9mn) and will have an installed capacity of 50MW, according to Tuoi Tre News.

The facility is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.

Speaking at the event, Huynh Chi Nguyen, vice-chairman of the Ca Mau People's Committee, said recent administrative restructuring had strengthened the province's prospects for developing its marine economy and expanding renewable energy generation.

With an extensive coastline and favourable wind conditions, Ca Mau is well positioned to harness wind energy, he noted. The province has identified clean power as a key pillar of its growth strategy, helping to enhance energy security while supporting national goals on sustainable and low-carbon development.

Under its development plans for 2026–2030, Ca Mau is targeting annual electricity output growth of more than 10.4%. Alongside wind energy, the province is promoting investment in solar power and hydrogen production, while upgrading transmission networks to accommodate rising supplies of renewable electricity.

Once commissioned, the Japan–Bac Lieu Wind Power Plant is expected to feed additional clean energy into the national grid, create employment opportunities, increase local revenues and contribute to broader socio-economic development in the province.
