AfrOil: Additional countries sign on to Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline

Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Benin and Guinea have signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Nigerian National Petroleum Co. Ltd (NNPCL) to further the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) project.

The proposed 5,600-km pipeline, an extension of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), will connect 13 African countries at an estimated cost of $25bn. With the new MoUs, all countries along the proposed route have now signed the agreement, and their national oil companies (NOCs) have also stated their joint commitment to the pipeline. (In 2022, Nigeria and Morocco signed similar MoUs with Ghana, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Mauritania and Senegal.)

NMGP will facilitate the export of Africa’s natural gas resources by serving as an alternative delivery route to Europe. Africa possesses significant amounts of natural gas, and the new pipeline would enable the continent to become a reliable supplier to European markets, potentially reducing the Continent’s long-standing dependence on Russian fuel.
