AfrOil: Dangote Refinery launched

The long-awaited $19bn Dangote Refinery, billed as a solution to Nigeria’s chronic fuel shortages, has been commissioned after years of planning, construction and delays. The 650,000 barrel per day (bpd) Dangote refining complex, built in the Lekki Free Zone near Lagos, is the biggest downstream facility in Africa and the largest single-train facility in the world.

The plant’s launch has been labelled a “game-changer for the Nigerian people” by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dangote Group CEO Aliko Dangote also hailed the launch of his plant, noting that the initial goal of the project was “to ramp up production of the various products to ensure that within this year, we are able to fully satisfy the nation’s demand for quality products.”

He continued: “There will be constant availability of high-quality fuels for our transportation sector, the refinery will also make available to our industries vital raw materials for wide range of manufacturing.”
