AfrOil: Tanzania, Kenya agree to fast-track gas pipeline

The governments of Tanzania and Kenya have agreed to fast-track plans for the construction of a natural gas pipeline that will eventually connect the former country’s old capital, Dar es Salaam, to the latter’s capital city, Nairobi.

Kenyan President William Ruto confirmed reports to this effect on October 10, saying after a meeting with his Tanzanian counterpart Samia Suluhu Hassan that his administration intended to move forward with the project. The gas pipeline is expected to reduce the cost of energy supplies for Kenya’s industrial enterprises, as well as the price of LPG (cooking gas) for residential consumers, he said.

“We will expedite the gas pipeline from Dar es Salaam to Mombasa and eventually to Nairobi so that we can use the resources that we have to lower energy tariffs both for commercial and domestic use in Kenya,” he said at a joint press briefing with the Tanzanian president.
