Nigeria inaugurates first modular LPG plant, 20-MW gas-to-power project

The Nigerian government has inaugurated the country’s first modular liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) extraction plant and a 20-MW gas-to-power project at the Otakikpo field in Rivers State.

The projects, developed by Green Energy and Lekoil Joint Venture, were officially commissioned by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo. Before the ceremony, the minister toured the facilities, which include the LPG extraction plant, power plant, early production facility and Nigeria’s first independently built land terminal.

Ekpo commended the joint venture for its efficient resource deployment and commitment to local content, highlighting the collaboration between host communities and operating companies that facilitated the projects’ timely completion.

“These projects will create opportunities for a robust gas economy, provide electricity for the communities, create jobs for youths, and offer other benefits aligned with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda for the country,” Ekpo said in a press release.

The federal government continues to promote greater domestic gas utilisation, particularly through the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, which has invested over $450mn in expanding compressed natural gas infrastructure nationwide.

The government has also committed to accelerating clean cooking access, aiming to increase the adoption rate from 22% to 25% annually. Currently, only 27% of Nigeria’s more than 200mn people have access to clean cooking, leaving around 150mn reliant on firewood and charcoal.
